A WALK THROUGH OLD AHMEDABAD

A WALK THROUGH OLD AHMEDABAD

Old Ahmedabad is that part of the city which is an abode of simplicity and generosity. As one walks through the streets of old Ahmedabad one can witness awe-inspiring scenes that local people perform every day. So here is a bit of my experience, which was really great.

This heritage walk through the streets of Old Ahmadabad begins from Kavi Dalpatram Chowk, Kavi Dalpatram was one of the famous Gujarati poets and there was his old house which was restored well. Which had quite a big courtyard outside and his followers had got a statue of him done over there.
As we started walking ahead we came across many bird feeding towers. That was very unique about this place. These were tall towers with a decorated top with chatris of Rajasthan where they hung plates and bowls of grains and water for the birds. And they also kept grains and cereals and corns and various other stuff in the punctures of their outdoor walls so that animals like squirrels could eat them up. They also had feeding ground for cows. This shows how the people of old Ahmedabad have still retained their sensitivity towards nature and animals.
Old Ahmedabad has a system of Pols meaning colonies. Every Pol had a huge entrance with small rooms on top across the entrance which acted like watchmen’s cabin kind of. And Pol had its own different feature and they had their own different temples. For example, Khara Kuva Ni Pol had Ramji Mandir and the next Pol had Jain temple and another Pol had Jami Masjid which had Muslim community. This place has a vivid culture in terms of religion, art and architecture.

The streets are narrow well shaded. The ground floors of certain houses act as a commercial patch and top floors are where the families reside.E very house has a detailed out entrance door and pillars. They also kept water pots outside their houses for businessmen and travellers and vendors. The pols had secret passageways to run away whenever attacks take place. Even after all of this modernization in our country these people still strongly reflect the culture of our nation. It is beautiful how they have maintained their surrounding, very eco-friendly. And with this beautiful experience of heritage walk, we move out of this place passing by Teen Darwaza a stone carved historical gateway.

Here are a few pictures of beautiful doors of this place. This shows how artists are the people of old Ahmedabad. In the centre picture above has a mural of a lady reading a book which also shows that these people gave importance to a woman's education. interesting isn't it? :)
